Mathcounts 2003
Congratulations
to the 2003 SASSDS Math Team
3rd place in the Regional Level
16th place in the MA State
Level
The team is decided via open
competition
to all middle schoolers. The team trained hard for the chapter
level
competition which took place at 2:30 PM Wednesday, February 12, at the McCarthy
Middle School in Chelmsford. The mathletes arrived back in
Sharon
at 8:30 PM. Thanks to the parents of Jacob Ahearn and Jacob
Caplain for helping me with the driving. Thanks to Bob Golden,
the
director of the competition, for once again going out of his way to get
us kosher pizza.

Regional Results 2003
We came in third place
winning
a tie breaker with the team who won overall last year. It was the
first time SASSDS has ever placed in this competition. This means
that we qualify to move on to compete at the state level. If we
win
again, we will move on to the national level. If we win the
nationals,
we meet the president of the United States, and he gets to tell us how
smart the kids are :-). The state level is scheduled for a
Saturday
in March, and I trust Mathcounts will accomodate our needs.
Our performance is due to
the
amazing hard work and dedication of the students. They have
boundless
energy and love for mathematics and problem solving. Our third
place
finish is especially significant considering the size of our
school.
We are a David among Goliaths, and we are certainly number one in ratio
of performance to the number of students in our pool.
Even more significant is
the
depth of our team. Our second team, was clearly number one among
the second teams, and scored in a virtual tie with our first
team.
Although only the first team counts in the team competition, the trophy
is to the credit of both teams.
In the individual
competition,
we had two students make the final ten, Reuben Aronson and Korei Klein,
5th and 6th respectively. Congratulations to all of the mathletes
for superb performance, sportsmanship, and behavior. They made me
very proud.
State Results 2003
Mathcounts generously agreed
to
accomodate our religious needs, and will send a representative to our
school
on Wednesday, March 5. The representative, Dan O'Brien, will
administer
the contest from 3-5 PM, seal the results, and open them on the actual
contest date a week later on Saturday, and they will be graded along
with
the other schools. Only one team of four may compete, with a
fifth
student allowed as an alternate.
There were 22 teams
competing
at the state level. The top 4 individual scores among all the
teams
combined, move on to the national level, along with the coach of the
winning
team. It is possible for the coach to move along with a team of
students,
none of whom are on his/her team, like the all-star game.
We came in 16th place out
of
22 teams. Individually, the highest score was Reuben Aronson who
came in 44th out of 110 students. Our team performed evenly, and
scored a perfect 10/10 on the team section. It is a super
performance,
and I hope we can do as well next year.
